BIRDING ON THE MADAKET 1 – AUGUST 25, 2024 – $50 – SOLD OUT
Time - 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Trip Leader(s): Gary Bloomfield & Kathryn Wendel
Join us for our annual fundraising bird tour aboard the historic Madaket vessel around Humboldt Bay, Eureka, CA. Board members and avian aficionados Gary Bloomfield & Kathryn Wendel will narrate this 2-hour excursion around the bay. Beverages will be available for purchase at the no-host bar. Exposed mudflats along the shore attract flocks of shorebirds, while seabirds can be seen in the bay’s open waters. Osprey and Peregrine Falcon are often seen perched on structures in or along the edge of the water or soaring overhead. Terns and gulls roosting on shoreline pilings are used to the boat cruising by closely and only peer at us quizzingly. Shorebird flocks often swoop by, offering a unique perspective. In addition to birds, expect to see harbor seals, sea lions, and harbor porpoises.
Registrants meet at the Madaket loading dock at the foot of “C” St. in Old Town Eureka. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to check in and board. The tour will depart promptly at 4 pm and return at 6 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance online at godwitdays.org. The cost is $50, proceeds support the 2025 Godwit Days festival.
The historic Madaket is the oldest active vessel in California and boasts the smallest licensed bar in the state. Bring your binoculars and camera, and dress in layers in case of a light breeze or cooler temperatures. This trip sells out quickly each year, so scoop up your tickets before all spaces are taken!
